General power tool safety warnings

Image alternative WARNING Read all safety warnings, instructions, illustrations and specifications provided with this power tool. Failure to follow all instructions listed below may result in electric shock, fire and/or serious injury.
Save all warnings and instructions for future reference.
The term "power tool" in the warnings refers to your mains-operated (corded) power tool or battery-operated (cordless) power tool.
Work area safety
  • Keep work area clean and well lit. Cluttered or dark areas invite accidents.
  • Do not operate power tools in explosive atmospheres, such as in the presence of flammable liquids, gases or dust. Power tools create sparks which may ignite the dust or fumes.
  • Keep children and bystanders away while operating a power tool. Distractions can cause you to lose control.
Electrical safety
  • Power tool plugs must match the outlet. Never modify the plug in any way. Do not use any adapter plugs with earthed (grounded) power tools. Unmodified plugs and matching outlets will reduce risk of electric shock.
  • Avoid body contact with earthed or grounded surfaces, such as pipes, radiators, ranges and refrigerators. There is an increased risk of electric shock if your body is earthed or grounded.
  • Do not expose power tools to rain or wet conditions. Water entering a power tool will increase the risk of electric shock.
  • Do not abuse the cord. Never use the cord for carrying, pulling or unplugging the power tool. Keep cord away from heat, oil, sharp edges or moving parts. Damaged or entangled cords increase the risk of electric shock.
  • When operating a power tool outdoors, use an extension cord suitable for outdoor use. Use of a cord suitable for outdoor use reduces the risk of electric shock.
  • If operating a power tool in a damp location is unavoidable, use a residual current device (RCD) protected supply. Use of an RCD reduces the risk of electric shock.
Personal safety
  • Stay alert, watch what you are doing and use common sense when operating a power tool. Do not use a power tool while you are tired or under the influence of drugs, alcohol or medication. A moment of inattention while operating power tools may result in serious personal injury.
  • Use personal protective equipment. Always wear eye protection. Protective equipment such as a dust mask, non-skid safety shoes, hard hat or hearing protection used for appropriate conditions will reduce personal injuries.
  • Prevent unintentional starting. Ensure the switch is in the off-position before connecting to power source and/or battery pack, picking up or carrying the tool. Carrying power tools with your finger on the switch or energising power tools that have the switch on invites accidents.
  • Remove any adjusting key or wrench before turning the power tool on. A wrench or a key left attached to a rotating part of the power tool may result in personal injury.
  • Do not overreach. Keep proper footing and balance at all times. This enables better control of the power tool in unexpected situations.
  • Dress properly. Do not wear loose clothing or jewellery. Keep your hair and clothing away from moving parts. Loose clothes, jewellery or long hair can be caught in moving parts.
  • If devices are provided for the connection of dust extraction and collection facilities, ensure these are connected and properly used. Use of dust collection can reduce dust-related hazards.
  • Do not let familiarity gained from frequent use of tools allow you to become complacent and ignore tool safety principles. A careless action can cause severe injury within a fraction of a second.
Power tool use and care
  • Do not force the power tool. Use the correct power tool for your application. The correct power tool will do the job better and safer at the rate for which it was designed.
  • Do not use the power tool if the switch does not turn it on and off. Any power tool that cannot be controlled with the switch is dangerous and must be repaired.
  • Disconnect the plug from the power source and/or remove the battery pack, if detachable, from the power tool before making any adjustments, changing accessories, or storing power tools. Such preventive safety measures reduce the risk of starting the power tool accidentally.
  • Store idle power tools out of the reach of children and do not allow persons unfamiliar with the power tool or these instructions to operate the power tool. Power tools are dangerous in the hands of untrained users.
  • Maintain power tools and accessories. Check for misalignment or binding of moving parts, breakage of parts and any other condition that may affect the power tool’s operation. If damaged, have the power tool repaired before use. Many accidents are caused by poorly maintained power tools.
  • Keep cutting tools sharp and clean. Properly maintained cutting tools with sharp cutting edges are less likely to bind and are easier to control.
  • Use the power tool, accessories and tool bits etc. in accordance with these instructions, taking into account the working conditions and the work to be performed. Use of the power tool for operations different from those intended could result in a hazardous situation.
  • Keep handles and grasping surfaces dry, clean and free from oil and grease. Slippery handles and grasping surfaces do not allow for safe handling and control of the tool in unexpected situations.
  • Have your power tool serviced by a qualified repair person using only identical replacement parts. This will ensure that the safety of the power tool is maintained.

Safety instructions for all saws

Cutting procedures
  • Image alternative DANGER: Keep hands away from cutting area and the blade. Keep your second hand on auxiliary handle or motor housing. If both hands are holding the saw, they cannot be cut by the blade.
  • Do not reach underneath the workpiece. The guard cannot protect you from the blade below the workpiece.
  • Adjust the cutting depth to the thickness of the workpiece. Less than a full tooth of the blade teeth should be visible below the workpiece.
  • Never hold the workpiece in your hands or across your leg while cutting. Secure the workpiece to a stable platform. It is important to support the work properly to minimise body exposure, blade binding, or loss of control.
  • Hold the power tool by insulated gripping surfaces, when performing an operation where the cutting tool may contact hidden wiring or its own cord. Contact with a "live" wire will also make exposed metal parts of the power tool "live" and could give the operator an electric shock.
  • When ripping, always use a rip fence or straight edge guide. This improves the accuracy of cut and reduces the chance of blade binding.
  • Always use blades with correct size and shape (diamond versus round) of arbour holes. Blades that do not match the mounting hardware of the saw will run off-centre, causing loss of control.
  • Never use damaged or incorrect blade washers or bolt. The blade washers and bolt were specially designed for your saw, for optimum performance and safety of operation.
Kickback causes and related warnings
  • kickback is a sudden reaction to a pinched, jammed or misaligned saw blade, causing an uncontrolled saw to lift up and out of the workpiece toward the operator;
  • when the blade is pinched or jammed tightly by the kerf closing down, the blade stalls and the motor reaction drives the unit rapidly back toward the operator;
  • if the blade becomes twisted or misaligned in the cut, the teeth at the back edge of the blade can dig into the top surface of the wood causing the blade to climb out of the kerf and jump back toward the operator.
Kickback is the result of saw misuse and/or incorrect operating procedures or conditions and can be avoided by taking proper precautions as given below.
  • Maintain a firm grip with both hands on the saw and position your arms to resist kickback forces. Position your body to either side of the blade, but not in line with the blade. Kickback could cause the saw to jump backwards, but kickback forces can be controlled by the operator, if proper precautions are taken.
  • When blade is binding, or when interrupting a cut for any reason, release the trigger and hold the saw motionless in the material until the blade comes to a complete stop. Never attempt to remove the saw from the work or pull the saw backward while the blade is in motion or kickback may occur. Investigate and take corrective actions to eliminate the cause of blade binding.
  • When restarting a saw in the workpiece, centre the saw blade in the kerf so that the saw teeth are not engaged into the material. If a saw blade binds, it may walk up or kickback from the workpiece as the saw is restarted.
  • Support large panels to minimise the risk of blade pinching and kickback. Large panels tend to sag under their own weight. Supports must be placed under the panel on both sides, near the line of cut and near the edge of the panel.
  • Do not use dull or damaged blades. Unsharpened or improperly set blades produce narrow kerf causing excessive friction, blade binding and kickback.
  • Blade depth and bevel adjusting locking levers must be tight and secure before making the cut. If blade adjustment shifts while cutting, it may cause binding and kickback.
  • Use extra caution when sawing into existing walls or other blind areas. The protruding blade may cut objects that can cause kickback.
Lower guard function
  • Check the lower guard for proper closing before each use. Do not operate the saw if the lower guard does not move freely and close instantly. Never clamp or tie the lower guard into the open position. If the saw is accidentally dropped, the lower guard may be bent. Raise the lower guard with the retracting handle and make sure it moves freely and does not touch the blade or any other part, in all angles and depths of cut.
  • Check the operation of the guard return spring. If the guard and the spring are not operating properly, they must be serviced before use. Lower guard may operate sluggishly due to damaged parts, gummy deposits, or a build-up of debris.
  • The lower guard may be retracted manually only for special cuts such as "plunge cuts" and "compound cuts". Raise the lower guard by the retracting handle and as soon as the blade enters the material, the lower guard must be released. For all other sawing, the lower guard should operate automatically.
  • Always observe that the lower guard is covering the blade before placing the saw down on bench or floor. An unprotected, coasting blade will cause the saw to walk backwards, cutting whatever is in its path. Be aware of the time it takes for the blade to stop after switch is released.
Guard function
  • Check the guard for proper closing before each use. Do not operate the saw if the guard does not move freely and enclose the blade instantly. Never clamp or tie the guard so that the blade is exposed. If the saw is accidentally dropped, the guard may be bent. Check to make sure that the guard moves freely and does not touch the blade or any other part, in all angles and depths of cut.
  • Check the operation and condition of the guard return spring. If the guard and the spring are not operating properly, they must be serviced before use. The guard may operate sluggishly due to damaged parts, gummy deposits, or a build-up of debris.
  • Assure that the base plate of the saw will not shift while performing a “plunge cut”. Blade shifting sideways will cause binding and likely kick back.
  • Always observe that the guard is covering the blade before placing the saw down on bench or floor. An unprotected, coasting blade will cause the saw to walk backwards, cutting whatever is in its path. Be aware of the time it takes for the blade to stop after the switch is released.
Riving knife function
  • Use the appropriate saw blade for the riving knife. For the riving knife to function, the body of the blade must be thinner than the riving knife and the cutting width of the blade must be wider than the thickness of the riving knife.
  • Adjust the riving knife as described in this instruction manual. Incorrect spacing, positioning and alignment can make the riving knife ineffective in preventing kickback.
  • Always use the riving knife except when plunge cutting. The riving knife must be replaced after plunge cutting. The riving knife causes interference during plunge cutting and can create kickback.
  • For the riving knife to work, it must be engaged in the workpiece. The riving knife is ineffective in preventing kickback during short cuts.
  • Do not operate the saw if the riving knife is bent. Even a light interference can slow the closing rate of a guard.

Intended use

The product described is a hand-held circular saw. It is designed for cutting wood or wood-like materials, plastics, gypsum plasterboard, gypsum fiberboard and composite materials, up to a cutting depth of 85 mm (3.35 in).

The circular saw is equipped with a removable connector for an optional vacuum cleaner / dust removal hose. This connector is designed to fit standard suction hoses. In order to connect the vacuum cleaner hose to the saw, use of a suitable adapter may be necessary.

Possible misuse

The use of saw blades that do not comply with the specifications given in the technical data or the use of cutting and grinding discs or blades made from high-alloy steel (HSS steel) is not permissible. Sawing metals is not permissible.

The sound pressure and vibration values given in these instructions were measured in accordance with a standardized test and can be used to compare one power tool with another. They can also be used for a preliminary assessment of exposure.
The data given represent the main applications of the power tool. However, if the power tool is used for different applications, with different accessory tools, or is poorly maintained, the data can vary. This can significantly increase exposure over the total working period.
An accurate estimation of exposure should also take into account the times when the tool is switched off, or when it is running but not actually being used for a job. This can significantly reduce exposure over the total working period.

Preparations at the workplace

Risk of injury! Inadvertent starting of the product.
  • Unplug the supply cord before making adjustments to the power tool or before changing accessories.
Observe the safety instructions and warnings in this documentation and on the product.

Fitting the saw blade

Risk of damage! Unsuitable or incorrectly fitted saw blades may damage the saw.
  • Only use blades which are suitable for this saw. Observe the direction-of-rotation arrow on the saw blade.
  • Use only saw blades equipped with a rated maximum permissible speed that is at least as high as the maximum speed stated on the product.

  1. Rest the power tool on the ribs provided.
  2. Lock the arbor by holding the arbor lock button down with one hand.
  3. Fit the clamping flange to the arbor.
  4. Securely tighten the screw.
  5. Make sure that the clamping flange is seated correctly.
    The riving knife thickness must be less than the kerf width of the saw blade and at least equal to the saw blade disc thickness. Gap A must be less than 5 mm (0.2 in).

Adjusting the cutting depth

For a clean-edged cut, set cutting depth to the thickness of the material plus 2 mm.

Setting the cutting angle

Setting the width for the cut

Types of work

Damaged power cords are a safety hazard! If the supply cord or extension cord is damaged while work is in progress, immediately disconnect the device and the cord from the electricity supply. Do not touch the damaged part of the cord.
  • Regularly check all supply cords. Replace defective extension cords. Have damaged power cords replaced by a qualified specialist.
Use of a ground fault circuit interrupter (residual current device, RCD) with a maximum tripping current of 30 mA is recommended.

Switching the power tool on

Risk of damage when cutting plastic! Overheating of the saw blade can cause plastic to deform or melt.
  • Take repeated short breaks while working so that the saw blade has enough time to cool down.
  1. Press the switch-on interlock.
  2. Press the on/off switch.

Sawing along a line

  1. Secure the workpiece to prevent movement.
  2. Make sure that the saw blade has clearance underneath the workpiece.
  3. Bring the front edge of the base plate into contact with the workpiece.
  4. Switch on the circular saw.
  5. Guide the circular saw along the cutting line on the workpiece at a suitable speed.

Sawing with the plunge function

In plunge cutting, the saw blade is lowered into the workpiece at a point suitable for starting the cut. The plunge function can be used with the saw blade set to any cutting angle.
To reduce the risk of kickback, secure a stop piece to the workpiece directly behind the base plate.

  1. Set the cutting depth to 0.
  2. Set the circular saw flat on the workpiece.
  3. Bring the rear mark on the base plate into alignment with the cutting line.
  4. Release the cutting depth lock.
  5. Press the saw against the workpiece and against the stop.
  6. Switch on the circular saw.
    • The saw blade moves down.
  7. Retighten the cutting depth lock as soon as the desired cutting depth is reached.
  8. Make the cut.

Switching the power tool off

  1. Release the on/off switch.
  2. Wait until the saw blade has stopped rotating.

Care and maintenance

Electric shock hazard! Attempting care and maintenance with the supply cord connected to a power outlet can lead to severe injury and burns.
  • Always unplug the supply cord before carrying out care and maintenance tasks.
  • Carefully remove any dirt that may be adhering to parts.
  • Clean the air vents carefully with a dry brush.
  • Use only a slightly damp cloth to clean the casing. Do not use cleaning agents containing silicone as these may attack the plastic parts.
Danger of electric shock! Improper repairs to electrical components may lead to serious injuries including burns.
  • Repairs to the electrical section of the tool or appliance may be carried out only by trained electrical specialists.
  • Check all visible parts and controls for signs of damage at regular intervals and make sure that they all function correctly.
  • Do not operate the product if signs of damage are found or if parts malfunction. Have it repaired immediately by Hilti Service.
  • After cleaning and maintenance, fit all guards or protective devices and check that they function correctly.

Removing the saw blade

Risk of injury! The accessory tool may be hot and/or have sharp edges.
  • Wear protective gloves when changing the accessory tool.
  • Never lay down a hot accessory tool on a flammable surface.
  1. Rest the power tool on the ribs provided.
  2. Lock the arbor by holding the arbor lock button down with one hand.
  3. Use a hex key to slacken the flange screw underneath the motor cover.
  4. Use the adjusting lever to set the cutting depth to 0.
  5. Use the hex key to turn the screw counter-clockwise to remove.
  6. Remove the clamping flange.
  7. Open the pivoting guard and hold it in the open position.
  8. Remove the saw blade.

Cleaning the guard

  1. Remove the saw blade.
  2. Clean the parts of the guard carefully with a dry brush.
  3. Use a suitable tool to remove deposits or cuttings from the inside surfaces of the parts of the guard.
  4. Reinstall the saw blade.

Check of pivoting guard

  • Using the operating lever, fully open the pivoting guard.
    • The pivoting guard must close quickly and completely when the guard operating lever is released.

Transport and storage

  • Do not transport this product with an accessory tool installed.
  • Make sure that the equipment is held securely throughout all transport operations.
  • After transporting, always check all visible parts and controls for signs of damage and make sure that they all function correctly.
  • Always store this product with the electric supply cable unplugged from the electricity supply.
  • Store this product in a dry place, where it cannot be accessed by children or unauthorized persons.
  • After a long period of storage, always check all visible parts and controls for signs of damage and make sure that they all function correctly.
